Beaches
|
The east-west stretch of the island fronts the placid Bahia de Mujeres and offers the best swimming, the undertow on the Caribbean side, the north-south stretch can be dangerous (flags are posted to indicate conditions). All beaches are government property and are open to the public. There are beautiful swimming waters and sandy beaches on the sheltered west coast, the cleanest beaches are associated with the hotels. Playa San Francisco is so long that access roads divide it into what seem to be numerous beaches. Some beaches are unnamed and deserted (except on Sundays when cruise ships are docked and locals spend time with their families). Other beaches such as Playa del Sol, are lively with restaurants, dive shops, and taxi stands.

Summer months are warmer, with highs in the upper 80s, but the sea breeze keeps it cool and comfortable. It seldom rains in the winter. Hurricane season is August - October, and that is when it is most likely to rain.
